Superintendent's Message

This week I had the pleasure of visiting Ms. Sheehan’s 4th-grade classroom, where Belle was reading her book, Belle the Brave.  The story is an incredible lesson in courage and determination. Thank you, Belle, for sharing your story!

Fall Is in the Air at Harborfields!

It certainly did not take long for Mother Nature to remind us that summer has officially come to an end! Seemingly overnight, warm September afternoons have given way to crisp mornings, cooler temperatures, and the unmistakable feeling of fall. As we make this seasonal transition, our schools are settling into the familiar rhythm of a new year; classrooms are buzzing with learning, fall athletics are in full swing, and our calendars are quickly filling with activities and events. I hope everyone has enjoyed a wonderful start to the school year and is looking forward to all that the fall season has in store for our Harborfields Family!

Pride-Filled Spirit Week and Pep Rally
Although the storm put a damper on the scheduled homecoming parade and game, nothing could stop the tremendous school spirit generated this week by the numerous spirit week activities, media day photoshoots, and the energy of this week's culminating Pep Rally.  Thank you to all of our class advisors, coaches, staff, and administrators who made this week a very special one for our Harborfields Tornadoes! It All Starts with Hello!

This week, students and staff fully embraced Start with Hello Week, a national call-to-action week dedicated to making new social connections between students and creating a sense of belonging. Start with Hello is sponsored by Sandy Hook Promise to combat social isolation among students. By participating in Start with Hello Week, our students work together to build an even stronger culture of inclusivity and empathy within our Harborfields community. When I stopped by the buildings throughout the week, I was so proud to see students meeting someone new, giving compliments to friends and teachers, identifying a trusted adult, and, of course, signing the pledge to be an upstander for other students.

WizFit Challenge Comes to WDPS & TJL!

We’re excited to bring the Harlem Wizards WizFit Challenge to our elementary students at Washington Drive and TJL! Beginning with kickoff assemblies on September 29, students will take part in a fun, two-week challenge through October 13, designed to encourage movement, healthy habits, school spirit, and a little Wizards-style fun along the way.

Families can register now and participate in the fundraising portion of the challenge, with all funds raised going directly back to WDPS and TJL to support enhancements to outdoor learning and activity spaces. It’s a great opportunity for our students to get moving, work toward individual and schoolwide goals, and come together in support of their schools.

We look forward to seeing our students embrace the challenge and show what can happen when healthy kids and a strong school community work together!

Here are some of my favorite moments from this past week:

Harborfields High School

Lights. Camera. Tornadoes! Our fall student-athletes stepped in front of the cameras for Fall Sports Media Day, representing their teams and Harborfields with pride! Thanks to all our students and staff who make experiences like this happen! Click on the image below to see some fun behind-the-scenes media day pictures.

Oldfield Middle School

Dr. Zenyuh's math classes learned about perfect squares by drawing and modeling them with geoboards and cubes!

Thomas J. Lahey Elementary School

Third graders have been learning all about pixels in the Makerspace! Students created pixel self-portraits and then brought their designs to life with LEGO bricks! This hands-on activity helps students understand how digital images are created and prepares them to eventually use the Sprite Editor in KidOYO. We love seeing creativity, technology, and hands-on learning come together!

Washington Drive Primary School

A friendly hello was the perfect way to kick off Start With Hello Week at Washington Drive! School Resource Officers greeted students as they arrived Monday morning, setting the tone for a week all about connection, kindness, and making everyone feel welcome. Inside, students were surrounded by cheerful reminders from the PTA that starting a friendship can be as simple as saying hello!
