What is the Seal of Biliteracy?

The New York State Seal of Biliteracy (NYSSB) is an award given to high school graduates who have demonstrated a high level of proficiency in English and one or more world languages.

The NYSSB encourages the study of languages, affirms the value of diversity in a multilingual society, and provides universities and future employers with additional information about applicants.

Why should I consider pursuing the Seal?

The Seal of Biliteracy:

  • acknowledges the importance of being bilingual in today’s global society.
  • highlights the hard work and achievement of students, and encourages them to maintain their home language and/or pursue an additional language study while in school.
  • becomes a part of the high school transcript and diploma (recipients will receive an official seal affixed to their diploma and a medallion to wear at graduation.)
  • is a statement of accomplishment for future employers and for college admission.

What do I need to do?

Complete all requirements for a New York State local or Regents diploma, and earn a total of six points on this chart, including a culminating project in English and a culminating project in the target language.

How will I track my progress?

Join the Harborfields Seal of Biliteracy Google Classroom using the following class codes depending on your graduation cohort:
