Superintendent's Message

It was a pleasure to attend the Tri-M Honor Society Induction this week.  As part of the Musical Interlude during the ceremony, siblings Brynn and Alec Gerde, played a beautiful rendition of Duo by Jules Massenet.  Congratulations to all of our inductees and thank you to Brynn and Alec for adding a special performance for all in attendance!

Easing Into October

September seemed to have gone by in a flash! It was a pleasure to see so many families at our evening programs, games under the lights, and other fun-filled events. Our students are definitely in their groove, with our youngest learners accustomed to their daily routines, our middle school students are now experts at getting around their school, and our high school students are riding the momentum of spirit-filled activities and exciting athletic contests. The energy in our halls and classrooms is inspiring, and I look forward to celebrating all that our students and staff will achieve together in October.

National Merit Commended Students
We are pleased to announce that seven seniors have been named Commended Students in the 2026 National Merit Scholarship Program! Congratulations to Paul DiPaola, Alec Gerde, Brynn Gerde, Sienna Moss, Aileen Collins, Ian Chae, and Aidan Greco on this tremendous accomplishment. More than three million students took the 2025 preliminary SAT/NMSC qualifying test last October, and these seven students are among the top 4% nationwide based on their scores!

Celebrating National Principals Month!
October is National Principals Month, and we want to express our heartfelt gratitude to the amazing principals who lead our schools. Their dedication, passion, and commitment shape the educational experiences of our students and foster positive school cultures.

Every day, our principals inspire teachers, staff, and students to strive for their best. They navigate challenges with grace and create environments where every student can thrive. This month, join us in recognizing and thanking these remarkable leaders.

To our wonderful principals, Ms. McNally, Ms. Washington, Ms. Corr, and Dr. Farrelly, thank you for all that you do. Your leadership and tireless efforts make a profound difference. I hope our Harborfields community will take a moment to thank a principal and show our appreciation for their invaluable contributions to our schools and communities.

School Custodian Appreciation Day

School Custodian Appreciation Day was celebrated across the nation on October 2. Our custodial teams do a fantastic job ensuring our facilities are safe, secure, and always in good working order. Their hard work helps create clean, welcoming environments where students and staff can learn, work, and thrive each day. Thank you for all you do for our schools!

Here are some of my favorite moments from this past week:

Harborfields High School

It was a special evening celebrating the newest members of the Harborfields High School Tri-M Music Honor Society! From guest speaker Mr. Khan to honorary inductee Mrs. Maichin, and of course the newest Tri-M inductees whose talent, leadership, service, and dedication continue to strengthen our Harborfields community. A great night celebrating music, service, and the students who make our performing arts programs so special.

Oldfield Middle School

Mrs. McGrath's students created a giant timeline of events from ancient civilizations all the way up to modern time! Click the photo below and watch as the students figure out ways to work together to build the timeline without communicating verbally!

Thomas J. Lahey Elementary School

Swoop from the famous Harlem Wizards stopped by TJL to get students excited about the WizFit Challenge! A huge thank you to HF PTA Council for bringing this exciting opportunity to TJL and our Harborfields schools. We can’t wait to get moving, have some fun, and take on the challenge!

Washington Drive Primary School

WDPS learns about Fire Safety! Thank you to the Greenlawn and Centerport fire departments for visiting our school and teaching our students these important skills.

Announcements and Shoutouts

Washington Drive is a National PTA School of Excellence!

Shoutout to Washington Drive and the WDPS PTA on being named a 2025-2027 National PTA School of Excellence! This prestigious designation recognizes schools and PTAs that build strong family-school partnerships and create a welcoming, supportive environment where every child can thrive. WDPS is one of only 321 schools and PTAs nationwide to receive this honor- a testament to the dedication of our families, staff, administrators, and PTA volunteers working together to support student success. Congratulations to everyone who helped make this incredible achievement possible!

Harborfields Educators Lead the Way!

LEAD LI held their fall conference on Friday, October 2, and Harborfields educators didn't just attend the conference, they led it! This year's theme, "Leading Forward: Innovation, Assessment, and Authentic Learning for a Changing World," brought educators together to learn, share ideas, and explore new approaches to teaching and learning. Harborfields was well represented with many staff members attending the conference and an additional nine educators serving as presenters for four different sessions covering a range of relevant topics.

Thank you to all of our presenters for sharing their expertise with educators across Long Island and representing Harborfields in such a positive light!
