Spring is Officially Here!

Spring is officially here and that means longer days, warmer weather, flowers in bloom, and a chance to start fresh after a long winter. Here in Harborfields, spring marks a new sports season, an exciting calendar full of events, and countless opportunities to learn and grow.

It gives me great pleasure to be able to share with you each week the outstanding work of our students and staff.  Thank you for taking the time to read my weekly update!

Bravo! OMS Theatre Presents High School Musical Jr.

This past Friday and Saturday, our amazing middle school students put on two amazing performances of High School Musical Jr.  A big shoutout to the show’s director, Ms. DaSilva, and her team (Ms. Drzewiecki, Ms. Lanigan, Mr. Temps, Mr. Taveras, Mr. Antonelli, Mr. Rinaldi, Ms. Rae, Ms. Fisher, Ms. Stark, and Ms. Miller) for supporting our students over the past several weeks.  Congratulations to the cast and crew!

From Harborfields To The NHL

Former Harborfields student, Matt Coronato, recently returned to New York as a star player for the Calgary Flames to take on the NY Rangers at Madison Square Garden.  On hand to cheer Matt on was his third-grade teacher from his days at Thomas J. Lahey Elementary, Ms. Sonia Armstrong!

Summer HACEF & Booster Club Camps

Spring may have just started, but summer is already on our minds. Registration is officially open for the HACEF & Booster Club Camps.

2025-2026 School Budget Development Process

The annual school budget development process for the 2025-2026 school year is well underway. The Third Budget Presentation in this process was provided during this past Wednesday’s Regular Board of Education meeting.  As always, we encourage residents to stay engaged in this process by attending meetings, reviewing budget information posted on our website, and contacting the district with any questions or feedback. Thank you!

Schools Closed March 31st - Eid al Fitr

This is a gentle reminder that all schools will be closed on Monday, March 31st in observance of Eid al Fitr as indicated on the school calendar.

Here are some of my favorite moments from this past week:

Harborfields High School

Did you know the high school has a Scrubs Club made up of high school students who are interested in pursuing careers in various healthcare fields? Last week, the Scrubs Club hosted a Wellness Fair for TJL third graders! Over two days, club members visited TJL where they worked with classes to teach about stress, hygiene, nutrition, allergies, sleep, and exercise. The TJL students were eager to participate and left with valuable knowledge and healthy habits they can use every day. Kudos to the high school students who did a great job making health education interactive and fun!

Oldfield Middle School

I visited with our OMS Harborfields Hackers team who competed in a Hackathon, a three-hour fast-paced competition, developed by kidOYO and held at Hauppauge Middle School. The format of play was inspired by the game Risk! OMS competed against "hackers" from 12 Long Island school districts. I enjoyed seeing the students use teamwork and problem-solving skills to tackle the complex challenges. Great job Harborfields Hackers, we are so proud of you!

Thomas J. Lahey Elementary School

Friday, March 21 was World Down Syndrome Day, and students and staff at TJL showed their support by wearing colorful socks and blue and yellow clothing. Leading up to the celebration, students designed their own unique sock creations to highlight the beauty within our differences! It warmed my heart to see the students embrace kindness, unity, and inclusion. Way to go!

Washington Drive Primary School

Students at Washington Drive got in the St. Patrick’s Day spirit with a STEM activity in the Makerspace. They put their creativity and STEM skills to the test, working in small groups to design and build the perfect leprechaun trap! Through problem-solving, teamwork, and a little bit of luck, they engineered some truly impressive creations. Great job!

ANNOUNCEMENTS AND SHOUTOUTS

HF Pride - Congratulations to Our College Athletic Commits!

Congratulations to the 17 senior athletes from Harborfields High School who committed to playing a sport at the collegiate level! Mr. Franco, Director of Athletics, brought our community together this week to celebrate these students at a ceremony on Thursday, March 20, surrounded by their families, coaches, and building administrators. We are so proud of all they’ve accomplished and can’t wait to see what’s in store for them as they enter this next chapter!
