Building Upon Our Traditions of Excellence!
As we approach the mid-point of the school year, I continue to feel an overwhelming sense of pride in the achievements of our students and staff. Their dedication, kindness, and commitment to excellence are evident each day in our classrooms, on our stages, and throughout our community. This coming week also provides an opportunity to pause and honor the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., whose life and work remind us of the power of service, empathy, and standing up for what is right. As we celebrate his enduring message of equity, justice, and unity, I wish our Harborfields Families a meaningful and reflective Martin Luther King Jr. holiday, and I encourage us all to carry forward his spirit through acts of compassion and respect in our schools and beyond.

Harborfields High School Makes the Honor Roll!
It fills me with great pride to share that Harborfields High School was named to the 2025 Advanced Placement School Honor Roll! The AP School Honor Roll recognizes schools whose AP programs are delivering results and broadening participation for students. The AP School Honor Roll offers four levels of distinction: Bronze, Silver, Gold, and Platinum. We are thrilled to share that this year, HHS advanced from Gold to Platinum designation, reflecting the highest level of disinction and our commitment to expanding access to rigorous academic opportunities for all students, tying back to our Strategic Action Plan.
Newsday Cheer Fest Newsday’s third annual Cheer Fest was a true embodiment of everything the sport was built on: energy, pride, and school spirit. Harborfields was one of 47 Long Island Varsity cheer squads that took to the mat to show off their skills at Hofstra University. Great job, Tornadoes!
Shine-A-Light Week - January 20-23
Harborfields Central School District is proud to host Shine a Light Week from January 20–23, 2026, to promote empathy and personal responsibility in our community. Each school will highlight a core value aligned to this mission, and students will have the opportunity to participate in daily themed activities such as Acts of Kindness, Compliment Day, a HACO food drive, and a district-wide Wear Pink Day.
A key component of this year’s initiative is the return of the Mobile Museum of Tolerance, funded by the Simon Wiesenthal Center. The museum will serve students at Oldfield Middle School and Harborfields High School through interactive, educator-led lessons. Sixth-grade students will participate in The Anne Frank Story, while eighth-grade and high school students will engage in the Combat Hate: Digital Media Literacy Workshop, focusing on recognizing hate, responsible online behavior, and positive digital citizenship.
As part of Shine a Light Week, the community is invited to a special evening event on January 22, 2026, at 7:00 PM, featuring a screening of Names, Not Numbers, a Holocaust documentary created by local teens. The evening will include a question-and-answer session with Holocaust survivor Edith Gross, offering a meaningful opportunity to connect directly with history.

Here are some of my favorite moments from this past week:
Harborfields High School:
At Playfest, high school students from each grade wrote, directed, and performed their own original plays, competing for a $1,000 prize for their class. This year's winning play, "Riddles Three" was brought to life by senior Matthew Fey, who both wrote and starred in the production. From the dynamic student performers to the evening's fabulous MCs, every production showcased talent, creativity, and most of all fun! Congratulations to all!
Oldfield Middle School: Peer leaders in the new Sources of Strength program presented to sixth-grade classes. Students were introduced to the program, reminded of where they can go when they are in need of help, and how they can find their own Sources of Strength. Thank you to Mrs. Lowenhar, Ms. Minogue, Ms. Leonard, and Mrs. Kaley for their help in facilitating the presentations!
Thomas J. Lahey Elementary School: Emmy Award–winning meteorologist Samantha Augeri brought the weather to life for TJL students with her high-energy, hands-on demonstrations using real forecasting tools and interactive experiments. Students even stepped into the role of meteorologists themselves, reporting the weather and seeing their forecasts come to life on the big screen.
Washington Drive Primary School: Second graders enjoyed the opportunity to learn more about the district’s music program at Instrument Exploration Night! Thank you to the high school students who shared their passion for music and to our outstanding music department for creating such a meaningful experience.
